Supraglacial lake

5/19/2022

"Supraglacial Lake", 2022, woven bead mosaic on a thrifted blue bowl.

I heard yesterday that a supraglacial lake in India broke through its ice dam and thundered down the mountain taking out a bridge and two power stations. I discovered that this event happened a couple of days prior to me making this video. I would have gotten chills but I'm scientifically literate and the more scientifically literate you are the better you get as a Prophet of Doom. The Earth is warming. Ice melts. Basic cause and effect. Sadly, it's easy to predict. I'm making art documenting it and trying to cope emotionally.

Round hexagonal tutorial

4/25/2022

I am preparing for a workshop I am leading with the Midwest Collage Society on May 1. I did this tutorial for any of the artists interested in how bead weaving works. I don't think I will play the whole thing, but now I have a tutorial, if anyone is interested.

We'll be talking about using beads and bead weaving as elements in collages and assemblages. I will also bring beads for them to string and use on 2nd-hand glassware for them to make little beaded votive holders just to give them a mini how-to on the process.

I'll give them tips on adhesives, different beadweaving techniques, needles, bead selection, and upcycling used items.

That reminds me. I need to put together a Powerpoint to guide us through these topics including samples of my work as they relate to collage/assemblage.

arctic sea ice

I finished Thwaites Glacier today. Now I'm looking for an image to put in the projector to make a stencil for an Arctic Sea Ice mosaic. I might start with the median ice edge in transparent beads and get more opaque white toward the middle.

While looking I found this article and rendering on CNN from 2019 for a proposed geoengineering design.
https://www.cnn.com/style/article/refreeze-arctic-design-scn/index.html

It's very scifi and I haven't seriously looked into it, nor do I have the knowledge to know whether it is viable. I'm sure any suggestion to implement something like this would spark heated debate.

One element of the design proposes using a reflective sand. I'd like to get a sample to check out.

From my profile in EntryThingy:

Artist Statement

For the past few years, I have been creating woven bead mosaics in 2D and 3D, and bead installations. Beads allow me the ability to paint with a myriad of colors, transparencies, textures and lusters of light. My work straddles many categories of decorative craft and fine art.

I hope that those who view my work will enjoy the sensuous optical, dimensional, and tactile stimuli that I am presenting in them and experience a sense of wonder.

My work often celebrates artists of any media, nature, climate change, science, space exploration, and visionary art.

Collective Awakenings Statement
For “Collective Awakenings,” I chose to enter “Goldilocks Panopticon” and “Enchanted Spring,” two of my most optimistic and revitalizing pieces. This is the time for everybody to emerge after sheltering and masking from contagion. It is time to get out into the sun and enjoy each other’s company. Finally together, our shared delight is enhanced in the beauty and wonder of the natural world.

Permafrost

Artwork description uploaded to saatchiart.com/

"Permafrost" is from a series of woven bead mosaics on convex mirrors inspired by climate science. The series  intends to chronicle the thawing of geologic ice.

The beads have a variety of lusters that mimic the look of glistening ice crystals in a matrix of matte soil.

I chose to create mosaics on salvaged convex mirrors for two reasons. The convex mirror is used as a poetic device because we monitor our surroundings in them for imminent hazards. I also like the optical effects I can get from layering different transparencies of glass and reflective beads over a mirror. The light coming in and bouncing around creates a more luminous and variable work of art.

To get the look of ice without being literal, I used a circular hexagonal pattern and chose beads that reminds me of the crystalline patterns of ice.
